European Union: Closed Commission investigation into Apple's rules for in-app payment system and steering (Case AT.40716)

Description

Closed Commission investigation into Apple's rules for in-app payment system and steering (Case AT.40716)

On 24 June 2024, the European Commission concluded its antitrust investigation into Apple's practices within the European Economic Area concerning the mandatory use of its proprietary in-app purchase system (IAP) and restrictions on app developers from informing users of alternative purchasing options outside the App Store (case AT.40716). The investigation initiated on 16 June 2020 was closed following Apple's designation as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that Apple cannot force app developers to use its IAP system and must eliminate restrictions on steering. This decision was made to prevent duplicative investigations into the same conduct, aligning with the DMA's clear prohibitions.
