On 25 March 2024, the European Parliament published its report on the proposal for a regulation amending Regulation (EU) 2021/1173 to enhance Europe's leadership in trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) initiative for start-ups. The amendments include defining "Artificial Intelligence-dedicated supercomputers" and establishing "AI Factories" as centralised hubs offering AI-specific super-computing services. Further, amendments include integrating AI-dedicated supercomputers into the EuroHPC expanding their role in training large-scale AI models and applications. This entails creating access modes tailored for AI start-ups and academic researchers, promoting transparency and open access principles. The regulation also emphasises the role of AI Factories in facilitating skills development, supporting interdisciplinary research, and promoting gender-balanced participation across Europe.
