Republic of Korea: Announced KCC initiative to strengthen international collaboration in combating distribution of false and manipulated information online

On 17 June 2024, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced an initiative to strengthen international collaboration in combating the distribution of false and manipulated information online, facilitated by technologies such as deepfake. Acknowledging the global reach of misinformation through social media and video platforms, KCC emphasised the necessity of joint efforts among countries and platform operators. The commitment follows discussions at international summits where consensus was reached on the importance of cooperation in addressing these challenges effectively. In partnership with the OECD, KCC will participate in developing recommendations on information integrity, promoting environments that prioritise accurate, evidence-based information and diverse viewpoints for informed decision-making. The KCC plans to expand its cooperative framework with international organisations and countries to establish comprehensive policies aimed at fostering a secure and trustworthy online environment globally.
