Supreme Court of the Russian Federation issues position expanding the courts' jurisdiction over tech-related cases

On 30 June 2021, the Russian Supreme Court ruled that Russian courts have jurisdiction over cases involving foreign companies advertising their services on the Internet. The decision overruled a lower court that stated that cases involving foreign companies advertising their services on the Internet are not admissible to Russian courts since these entities do not have a presence (office or property) in the country and thus have a "foreign status". The Supreme Court contradicted this view, noting that Russian courts could consider cases where the defendant is a foreign company if that entity advertises its services or products on the Internet, targets Russian consumers, and meets criteria such as having a webpage in the Russian language, prices listed in Russian roubles, or Russian phone numbers as a contact.
