On 3 December 2020, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) adopted a note on intellectual property and artificial intelligence (AI) based on Singapore's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS), launched in November 2019. The NAIS recognised the role of intellectual property rights in an effective AI regime because it allows innovators and creators to protect their competitive advantage and allows for returns on their investments. The information note explains the several IP issues that AI innovators should be aware of and provides an overview of how different types of IP rights can be used to protect different AI inventions. It outlines what patents, copyrights, trade secrets, and open-source software are and how they can be obtained, and it provides examples for each. Lastly, IPOS installed programmes that allow AI innovators to accelerate patent protection in Singapore and abroad, using the SG IP Fast Track.
