On 4 June 2024, the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) announced that Tools for Humanity Corporation, the main developer of Worldcoin, has legally committed to suspending its activities in Spain. Worldcoin will resume its activities until the end of the year or until the Bavarian Data Protection Authority (BayLDA) in Germany, where the company has its main establishment, reaches a final decision in the investigation into the company’s data processing. The AEPD noted that the commitment does not limit the AEPD or BayLDA's ability to impose additional measures if the company fails to comply with the adopted commitments. Previously, on 6 March 2024, the AEPD issued an order imposing a temporary ban on Worldcoin's data processing activities in Spain. The order was issued after AEPD received several complaints against Worldcoin, citing issues such as insufficient information, data collection from minors, and the inability to withdraw consent. The AEPD's action was based on exceptional circumstances requiring immediate cessation of data processing to prevent potential data transfer to third parties and to safeguard the fundamental right to personal data protection. The National Court subsequently upheld the temporary ban.
