On 6 May 2024, China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) adopted the Interim Provisions on Internet Anti-Unfair Competition. The regulation includes a ban on the usage of algorithms and data to influence users. That includes fabricating positive user reviews, using display methods that mislead by hiding negative reviews or manipulating their placement, and failing to differentiate between reviews for different products clearly. Furthermore, the regulation includes measures prohibiting exclusivity agreements that force merchants to use only a specific platform or impose unreasonable restrictions on the price or sales target. The SAMR is empowered to enforce these rules and issue corrective measures for violations of the rules. The regulation enters into force on 1 September 2024.
