Description

Issued National Consumer Secretariat order to Mercado Livre for removal of advertisements of 50 sellers due to non-compliance with legal and regulatory standards

On 10 May 2024, the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, acting through the National Council to Combat Piracy and Intellectual Property Offenses (CNCP), issued a request to Mercado Livre to remove advertisements of 50 sellers for selling cell phones that do not meet legal or regulatory standards. The order was issued as part of an investigation into the sale of irregular cell phones on e-commerce platforms following a complaint submitted by the Association of the Electrical and Electronic Industry (Abinee). Mercado Livre was given a 48-hour deadline to remove listings. The identified irregularities of the products include the lack of National Telecommunications Agency approval and certification, absence of standard chargers, non-compliance with warranty periods, and lack of authorised technical assistance in Brazil.
