Announcement of study into internet service providers' collection of personal data

On 26 March 2019, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a study into the practices of internet service providers' (ISPs) concerning the collection of personal data. In particular, the Federal Trade Commission issued orders to seven U.S. Internet service providers to inquiry how broadband companies handle information about consumers and their devices. Specifically, the FTC is interested how data is collected, retained, used and disclosed. The FTC is also interested in the types of personal information collected, the collection purposes and techniques, the data-sharing practices with third parties, the internal data-access policies, the length of data retention, the aggregation of data, the consumers' information about data collection practices, and the consumers' choices about the disclosure, deletion and access of personal information.
