Issued MIC fine on FPT Telecom and VTV for allegedly promoting illegal betting sites

On 17 April 2024, the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) imposed administrative fines on FPT Telecom and Vietnam Television (VTV) for broadcasting content on their application that promoted and advertised illegal betting websites during a live football match. The match, part of the second qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featured promotional images for websites offering illegal betting services, such as okvip and fun88, accessible to Vietnamese audiences. FPT Telecom was fined VND 85 million, and VTV was fined VND 50 million for violating Vietnamese laws against the promotion of illegal betting services. Online betting, gambling, and related services might adhere to the regulations of the country hosting the event, thus permitting their advertisements during sports matches. However, under Vietnamese law, these services and activities are prohibited. Consequently, advertising and promoting them constitutes a legal violation in Vietnam.
