On 30 October 2023, the President of the United States signed an Executive Order (EO) on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), including cybersecurity measures. The EO mandates the Secretary of Commerce, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in coordination with the Secretary of Energy and the Secretary of Homeland Security, to issue guidelines, establish standards and list best practices to ensure the safe and secure development and deployment of AI systems. Furthermore, the National Institute of Standards and Technology is required to develop testing protocols to verify AI system safety, and the Department of Homeland Security will implement these standards across critical infrastructure sectors. Additionally, the Departments of Energy and Homeland Security are required to issue guidelines to mitigate threats to critical infrastructure from AI systems, addressing not only physical but also cybersecurity risks.
