On 23 April 2024, the Italian Cabinet adopted the draft Bill on Provisions and delegation to the Government on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Act would designate as competent authorities the National Authorities for AI at the Digital Italy Agency (AgID) and the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) to ensure the application and implementation of national and European regulation on AI. Under the Bill, research, experimentation, development, adoption, application, and use of AI systems and models must respect fundamental rights and freedoms as prescribed by the Constitution, EU law, and principles of transparency, proportionality, security, economic valorisation of data, personal data protection, ethics, confidentiality, robustness, accuracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, and sustainability. The Bill would allocate EUR 1 billion to support AI projects and startups. The Bill also includes measures related to electronic health records, the use of AI in employment, and the use of AI in public administration and judicial activities.
