Signed US-Uruguay Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Critical and Emerging Technologies

On 11 April 2024, the United States of America and the Republic of Uruguay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation on select critical and emerging technologies, including machine learning and artificial intelligence development, semiconductors, and technological consumer goods. The agreement, signed in Montevideo, Uruguay, by representatives from both nations' Departments of Commerce and State and Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Industry, Energy, and Mining, establishes a Bilateral Working Group (BWG) to support innovation, sustainability, and economic opportunity. The BWG will focus on increased collaboration in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data flows, clean energy, telecommunications, cybersecurity, and biotechnology. Initial actions under the MoU include pursuing bilateral and multilateral collaboration on international standards for these technologies, hosting Uruguayan delegations in the United States for events and conferences, and supporting Uruguay's development of a national AI and data strategy.
