On 3 April 2024, a group of deputies of the National People's Congress in China submitted a proposal for the creation of a Digital Economy Promotion Law. The law aims to support the modernisation of China’s digital economy governance system and its capacity. The law aims to define the digital economy’s role and establish measures to support digital infrastructure, enhance data utilisation, promote digital industrialisation, strengthen digital governance, ensure the security of the digital economy, and encourage openness and cooperation. Furthermore, the law aims to impose new measures regarding data collection, data breaches, misuse of personal data and infringements on personal information and privacy.
