Japan: Introduced Bill on Promoting Measures Against Internet Slander

On 26 January 2024, The Bill aimed at promoting measures against Internet slander was introduced to the Japanese House of Representatives. The Bill includes a section on telecommunications carriers' obligations related to addressing and mitigating Internet slander. The Bill mandates that national and local governments establish a framework designed to facilitate an effective response to the prevention of cyber defamation and to provide redress for victims through collaboration with telecommunications providers. Further, requisite measures will be implemented to monitor the execution of strategies by telecommunications entities aimed at mitigating cyber defamation and extending assistance to victims thereof. Additionally, the Bill seeks to optimise the registration of foreign companies engaged in telecommunications business in Japan, ensuring they comply with local regulations.
