Description

Introduced Decree to amend General Law on Women's Access to a Life Free from Violence and the Federal Penal Code to include digital sexual violence

On 14 February 2024, the Decree to amend the General Law on Women's Access to a Life Free from Violence and the Federal Penal Code to include digital sexual violence was introduced to the Senate of Mexico. The degree aims to address the misuse of digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfakes, which have facilitated new forms of violence against women. The proposed decree aims to incorporate the notion of “digital falsification media”, defined as technology that uses AI and digital processing to create or modify audiovisual content, images, videos, sounds, texts, and virtual news that appear to be truthful but are actually false. The proposed decree also aims to address the crime of digital sexual violence. It proposes penalties for individuals who use information and communication technologies, including digital falsification media, to create and share real or simulated intimate sexual content of a person without their explicit consent.
