Portugal: Issued CNPD order requiring Worldcoin to suspend its collection and processing of biometric data for 90 days

Description

Issued CNPD order requiring Worldcoin to suspend its collection and processing of biometric data for 90 days

On 25 March 2024, the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) of Portugal issued an interim ruling requiring Tools for Humanity Corporation, the main developer of Worldcoin, to suspend the collection of iris, eye, and facial biometric data. The CNPD ordered the temporary limitation of the collection of biometric data for a period of 90 days, noting reports indicating the illegal collection of data from minors without proper authorisation. The CNPD argued that the urgent provisional measure aims to safeguard the fundamental right to the protection of personal data, especially of minors, as the risks associated with the processing of biometric data are high. The CNPD will continue its investigation and issue its final decision.
