United Kingdom: Withdrawal from EU Audiovisual and Media Services Directive and application of the Video-sharing platform (VSP) framework

Description

Withdrawal from EU Audiovisual and Media Services Directive and application of the Video-sharing platform (VSP) framework

On 31 December 2020, the UK withdrew from the EU Audiovisual and Media Services Directive as part of its exit from the EU. The Directive and the country of origin principle, whereby providers of broadcasting channels and video-on-demand services are only subject to the rules and regulations of the country of origin, no longer apply to services under UK jurisdiction. Therefore, providers now only need to comply with the UK framework for Video-sharing platforms (VSP), regardless of where the licensed service is received within the EU. The UK VSP regime is determined by Part 4B of the 2003 Communications Act and is further specified by OFCOM guidances.
