Announced European Ombudsman inquiry on European Commission's use of Artificial Intelligence in decision making

On 1 March 2024, the European Ombudsman initiated an inquiry into European Commission’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making. The inquiry aims to address concerns related to the accuracy, potential bias, explainability, and human oversight of AI. Specifically, the inquiry focuses on the automation of tasks, decision-making concerning the use of AI, transparency of decision-making processes, and accountability. Furthermore, the European Ombudsman requested information on the Commission's use of AI in analysing public feedback, discovering potential infringements of EU competition rules, and handling complaints. The European Commission is expected to provide a response to the inquiry by 14 June 2024.
