On 14 March 2024, the European Commission sent requests for information under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to 6 very large online platforms and 2 very large online search engines. The entities include Bing, Facebook, Google Search, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and X. The request seeks information on their respective mitigation measures for risks linked to generative artificial intelligence (AI) on their services, such as false information dissemination, viral spread of deepfakes, and automated manipulation of services that could mislead voters. The Commission is also seeking information and internal documents on risk assessments and mitigation measures related to the impact of generative AI on electoral processes, dissemination of illegal content, protection of fundamental rights, gender-based violence, protection of minors, and mental well-being. The platforms and search engines are required to provide the requested information by 5 April 2024 for questions related to election protection and by 26 April for the remaining questions. The Commission will assess the next steps based on the responses received.
