Issued Canadian Privacy Regulators statement endorsing Airbnb's updated surveillance policy

On 13 March 2024, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, along with the Information and Privacy Commissioners of British Columbia and Alberta and the interim President of the Office of the Information Commissioner of Quebec, adopted a joint statement endorsing Airbnb's decision to revise its global policy on the use of security cameras in rental accommodations. The new policy prohibits the use of indoor security cameras in all Airbnb listings, introduces more comprehensive rules for outdoor security cameras, and mandates hosts to disclose the presence of decibel monitors in order to maximise the privacy of individuals in the accommodations. The regulators noted Airbnb's willingness to engage with their offices and implement the recommendations made to the company the previous year. The new policy enters into force on 30 April 2024.
