Description

Issued ACM and RDI findings following joint inquiry into smart devices

On 4 March 2024, the Consumer and Market Authority (ACM) and the National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI) published the results of the investigation into the operation and security of smart devices. The investigation focused on compliance with the Sales of Goods and Digital Content Directives, which became applicable on 27 April 2022, and the rules under the Modernization Directive, which became applicable on 28 May 2022. The investigation aimed to evaluate the quality of information provided to consumers when purchasing smart devices and receiving updates. The investigation found that information on smart devices is frequently insufficient and incomplete, particularly concerning updated policies and operating system compatibility. Furthermore, the claims made by manufacturers did not always align with those of sellers, resulting in confusion. Security vulnerabilities were found on one device, and not all devices received the necessary security updates.
