Description

Issued ruling in European Commission lawsuit against Ireland for alleged non-compliance with Audiovisual Media Services Directive (C-679/22)

On 29 February 2024, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a ruling in Case C-679/22 brought by the European Commission against Ireland for failing to transpose Directive (EU) 2018/1808, also known as the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, into national law within the prescribed time limit. The Directive, which aims to update the EU legal framework for audiovisual media services, extends the scope of the previous Directive to cover video-sharing platforms and establishes rules to protect minors and the general public from harmful content. The Court's judgement imposed a sum penalty of EUR 2.5 million and a daily penalty payment of EUR 10'000 on Ireland until full compliance is achieved.
