Description

Introduced Bill to partially amend the Consumer Product Safety Act including quality of service requirements

On 1 March 2024, the Cabinet of Japan introduced the draft Bill to partially amend the Consumer Product Safety Act. The Bill will be submitted to the National Diet for adoption in the 213 ordinary session. The Bill includes quality of service requirements for manufacturers and importers of specified products for children. The Bill specifies that in case of potential hazards to domestic consumers, steps may be taken to request the business providing the transaction to remove the product from a listing if there is no anticipation that the seller will undertake necessary actions such as a recall. Furthermore, the Bill includes requirements for manufacturers and importers of specified products for children. These products, intended primarily for children's daily lives, must comply with the standards established by the government and require warnings such as suitability, target age group, and precautions for use. The products that do not fulfil these obligations cannot be sold.
