United States of America: Issued Department of Commerce Notice of Rulemaking on Securing the Information and Communications Technology and Services Supply Chain Concerning Connected Vehicles

On 29 February 2024, the Department of Commerce (DOC), under the direction of President Biden, issued a notice of rulemaking on securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain concerning connected vehicles. The DOC aims to conduct an investigation into the national security risks posed by connected vehicles that incorporate technology from countries of concern, including China. The investigation concerns cars which connect with personal devices, other cars, US infrastructure, and their original manufacturer, in particular, as the data exchanged is deemed sensitive by the authority. The DOC aims to gather information from the industry and the public on the nature of these risks and potential steps that could be taken to mitigate them.
