Republic of Korea: Adopted PIPC Order Designating Road Traffic Authority as Specialised Agency for Pseudonym Information Combination

On 29 February 2024, the Personal Information Protection Committee (PIPC) of the Republic of Korea designated the Road Traffic Authority as a specialised agency for combining pseudonym information. This designation, the second in the transportation field following the Korea Expressway Corporation, allows the Authority to combine various traffic accident data with welfare, medical, and communication data into pseudonymised information. The aim is to utilise this information for research purposes, such as traffic administration and the development of accident prevention services, and to provide services to private companies. The PIPC, along with a designated screening committee, conducted document and on-site reviews to ensure a safe data processing environment.
