Various guidance documents on data government are amended by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, to reaffirm some of the types of personal information generally considered sensitive in the context of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The updated guidance sets out that certain types of information (health and financial data, ethnic and racial origins, political opinions, genetic and biometric data, sexual orientation...) will generally be considered sensitive and require a higher degree of protection. The update aims to better explain the Canadian data protection regime to facilitate the review by the European Commission about Canada’s privacy legislation adequacy in front of the GDPR.
