Announced increase of checks of cookie banners

On 6 February 2024, the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) announced that it would intensify its checks on whether websites are correctly requesting permission for tracking cookies or other tracking software. The AP aims to tackle the issue of misleading cookie banners, which often hide certain buttons or automatically check boxes for "accept". The AP has provided clear guidelines on its website on how organisations should set up cookie banners to request permission properly.
