On 23 November 2023, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) adopted the Data Protection and Journalism Code of Practice, a statutory code under the Data Protection Act of 2018. The code is primarily aimed at media organisations and journalists, including press, broadcasters, and online media outlets. The code is applicable to personal data processing and provides practical guidance on data protection law compliance and good practice in a journalistic context. The code includes the criteria for qualifying under the journalism exemption, which includes assessing whether the publication aligns with the public interest and determining if compliance with certain regulations would conflict with the journalistic mission. The code comes into force on 22 February 2024.
