India: Announced Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advisory on misinformation and disinformation

On 20 January 2024, the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting adopted an advisory regarding misinformation and disinformation, specifically concerning the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya. The advisory concerns newspapers, private satellite TV channels, publishers of news and current affairs on digital media, and social media platforms. The advisory urges these entities to refrain from publishing or broadcasting any content that may be false, manipulated, or has the potential to disturb communal harmony or public order. Specifically, social media platforms, as part of their due diligence obligations, are advised to make reasonable efforts not to host, display, or publish information of the nature mentioned above.
