European Union: Opened Public Consultation on the inquiry into the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) application

Description

Opened Public Consultation on the inquiry into the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) application

On 11 January 2024, the European Commission opened a public consultation on the inquiry into the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) application until 8 February 2024. The GDPR has been effective since 25 May 2018 and aims to safeguard individuals' fundamental rights regarding personal data and facilitate the free flow of data for the digital economy. Article 97 of the GDPR mandates periodic reports on its evaluation, with the first one issued in 2020 and subsequent reports due every four years. The current initiative aims to address the application of GDPR across EU Member States, updating the assessment from the 2020 report and providing a comprehensive overview of its implementation beyond specific elements outlined in Article 97.
