Adopted Digital Platform Worker’s Rights Act

On 7 April 2022, the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario adopted the Digital Worker’s Rights Act. The Act establishes rights for all kinds of workers, whether they are employees or not. The Act confers workers the right to information about their work and payment, the right to a recurring pay period and payday, as well as the right to minimum wage, as defined in the Employment Standards Act. Further, the Act grants workers the right to amounts earned, tips, and other gratuities, the right to notice removal of access to the platform, and the right to resolve any work-related disputes in Ontario. Additionally, the Act obliges platform operators to keep records of the worker’s data and work conducted. The Act enters into force when proclaimed by the Lieutenant Governor.
