Russian Government wins court order censoring opposition's voting app

On 3 September 2021, the Moscow Arbitration Court ordered Google, its Russian counterpart Yandex and Apple to stop displaying the term “smart voting” in its search results. The "smart voting" app was created and promoted by allies of the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny, who was hoping to use it to consolidate the vote in the 2021 presidential elections. The Russian government had banned the project in June, after winning a court order labelling its organizers as “extremists” and began pressuring Apple and Google to remove the App. The app was removed from the app store providers shortly before the elections.
