On 6 December 2023, the Protect Liberty and End Warrantless Surveillance Act (PLEWSA/ HR 6570) was introduced to the House of Representatives, aiming to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The proposed Act would introduce limits to the surveillance of US citizens, by requiring additional justifications for electronic surveillance applications (Sections 201, 204, 205, 206, 207, 301), limiting extensions without new intelligence (Section 205) and creating stronger liabilities for unauthorised disclosures of information (Sections 402, 404). Section 208 of the proposed Act would modify the approved surveillance period for non-US persons from 120 days to 1 year.
