On 10 January 2024, the Government of Canada closed its public consultation on Canada's participation in treaty negotiations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Council of Europe (CoE). In particular, the Government seeks input to inform its negotiating positions, emphasising an inclusive approach to address potential risks associated with the design, development and use of AI. The Government aims to balance AI advancement with Canadian values and interests, including human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The treaty would govern rights, obligations and principles on AI to prevent and mitigate potential harms and risks of AI systems.
