On 26 January 2023, the Bill for the regulation of autonomous vehicles (AB 316) was introduced to the California Assembly. The Bill aims to authorise the testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads and includes provisions regarding the data that should be made available to regulators regarding the vehicle. In particular, the Bill would mandate the capture and retention of autonomous technology sensor data for a specified period after collisions to promote data availability for accident investigations. Additionally, the Bill would require manufacturers to provide clear disclosures about data collection to purchasers of autonomous vehicles. Finally, the Bill would establish reporting requirements for disengagements and crashes involving autonomous vehicles.
