Description

Adopted order including directions to the CRTC to establish a Sustainable and Equitable Broadcasting Regulatory Framework

On 14 November 2023, the Government of Canada issued directions to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to establish a sustainable and equitable broadcasting regulatory framework. The CRTC must consider and support Indigenous peoples' ability to create and produce programs, access those programs, and ownership and control of broadcasting undertakings. In addition, the CRTC is directed to impose requirements on broadcasting undertakings to support a wide range of Canadian programming and creators. The framework should exempt social media creators and video games. The CRTC must implement the necessary changes within two years and provide periodic public updates on the progress made in achieving the objectives of the broadcasting policy. The order enters into force on the day of its registration in the Gazette.
