Issued CNIL ruling in investigation into Google imposing a fine of EUR 100 million for unlawful cookie policy

On 7 December 2020, the French National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms (Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés - CNIL) sanctioned Google with a fine of 100 million euros in total (EUR 60 million against Google LLC and EUR 40 million against Google Ireland Ltd.). Specifically, Google was charged for three violations of article 82 of the French Data Protection Act by placing cookies on "Google.fr" without the consent of users, not informing the users about the cookies sufficiently and the impossibility of removing the cookies. Furthermore, the placed cookies even pursued advertising purposes.
