Signed Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence including safety measures

On 30 October 2023, the President of the United States signed an Executive Order (EO) on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), including safety measures. The EO mandates the Secretary of Commerce, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in coordination with the Secretary of Energy and the Secretary of Homeland Security, to issue guidelines, establish standards and list best practices to ensure the safe and secure development and deployment of AI systems, within 270 days. In addition, the Secretary of Commerce is required to develop guidelines and benchmarks for evaluating and auditing AI capabilities.
