Description

Signed Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence including content moderation regulation

On 30 October 2023, the President of the United States signed an Executive Order (EO) on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), including content moderation regulation. The EO aims to reduce risks posed by “synthetic content” and requires the Secretary of Commerce, within 240 days, to issue a report on techniques and methods of identifying content generated by AI and its provenience, labelling synthetic content, detecting synthetic content, preventing generative AI from producing child sexual abuse material and auditing and maintaining synthetic content. After submitting the report, within 180 days, the Secretary of Commerce has to develop guidance on content authentication and synthetic content detection measures, which will be used by other executive agencies and private companies that the government contracts.
