Description

Ratified Council of Europe Convention No. 108 on Data Protection (CETS No. 223 Protocol)

On 18 October 2023, Portugal ratified the amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS 223). This makes Portugal the 29th country to ratify the Protocol. The CETS 223 is a globally recognised and legally binding agreement aimed at harmonising and aligning regulations related to personal data processing. It emphasises restoring individuals' role as subjects rather than mere objects of algorithms, control, or surveillance. The Convention is designed to ensure robust protection for individuals' privacy in an increasingly digital world. To come into effect, 9 more countries need to ratify CETS 223.
