Announced EU Commission investigation into Meta’s compliance with DSA requirements to address illegal content and disinformation

On 19 October 2023, the European Commission sent a request for information to Meta regarding risk assessments and mitigation measures adopted under the Digital Service Act (DSA) to address the dissemination of illegal content and disinformation and protect the integrity of elections. The requested information from Meta is necessary for assessing the effectiveness of measures employed to protect the integrity of elections and combat illicit information and disinformation regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. Meta is required to provide information regarding the measures adopted regarding the integrity of elections by 8 November 2023 and addressing the misinformation regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict by 25 October 2023. The Commission may issue fines in accordance with Article 74 of DSA for inadequate, false, or misleading information or initiate further proceedings.
