Description

Closed public consultation on the implications of generative artificial intelligence for copyright

On 15 January 2024, the Government of Canada opened a public consultation on the implications of generative artificial intelligence (AI) for copyright. The inquiry includes an evaluation regarding the application of the copyright framework to text and data mining, especially when copyright works or other content, such as performances or sound recordings, are used to train AI systems. Furthermore, the inquiry aims to clarify how this framework applies to works generated either with the assistance of AI or entirely by AI. Finally, the inquiry addresses the liability regime applicability to cases when AI-generated content infringes existing copyright-protected works.
