On 16 June 2020, the European Commission (EC) opened an investigation into Apple for their allegedly anti-competitive App Store rules. More specifically, the EC is inquiring whether the inhibition of app developers in their choice of payment method is a violation of EU antitrust laws. Apple does not let app developers inform users about alternative payment methods. Furthermore, Apple only lets users download apps via the AppStore. These restrictions lead to app developers having to pay a commission fee of up to 30% with every subscription. These anti-steering provisions are problematic since they potentially strengthen Apple's dominant position in the app store market. These investigations will now follow up two complaints made by Spotify and an anonymous e-book distributor. If preliminary findings prove these allegations to be true, the EC will release a statement of objections.
