Australia: Issued order requiring online dating companies to develop a new voluntary industry code of practice

On 18 September 2023, the Albanese Labor Government requested online dating companies to develop a new voluntary industry code of conduct. This proposed code would encompass commitments to enhance cooperation with law enforcement agencies, provide assistance to vulnerable users, enhance safety protocols and procedures, and increase transparency regarding potential risks. The Government noted that if the voluntary code fails to significantly enhance the safety of online dating service users, it will issue binding regulations.
