Finland: Issued DPA order announcing further investigation into Yango over their data transfer within the European Economic Area (EEA) and postponing the suspension of data transfers to Russia

Description

Issued DPA order announcing further investigation into Yango over their data transfer within the European Economic Area (EEA) and postponing the suspension of data transfers to Russia

On 31 August 2023, the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman of Finland (DPA) announced that it had reviewed Yango's operations within the European Economic Area (EEA) and concluded that the impending Russian taxi legislation does not apply to Yango in the EEA. On 8 August 2023, the DPA issued an order banning Yandex LLC and Ridetech International from transferring customer data, including location information, collected through the Yango taxi service platform to Russia and refraining from processing the data it had collected. The focus of the investigations is on the legality of Yango's entire process for transferring personal data, with the Data Ombudsman unable to issue a permanent ban on Yango's operations in Finland, as such a decision falls under Dutch or European jurisdiction. The Data Ombudsman's temporary suspension of data transfers to Russia has been postponed for further examination.
