Spain: Adopted royal decree for the establishment of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA)

On 22 August 2023, the Spanish Council of Ministers adopted a royal decree for the establishment of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA) in anticipation of the adoption and implementation of the European Artificial Intelligence(AI) Act. The AI Act would mandate Member States to designate a national supervisory authority to ensure compliance with the Act. The AESIA, the established agency attached to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, will fulfil this role.
