Description

Adopted import licensing requirements for consumer-electronic devices

On 3 August 2023, the Central Government of India adopted import licensing prerequisites for consumer-electronic devices, introducing modifications to the import policy concerning items categorised under HSN 8471. Laptops and tablets are among the select electronic items that will necessitate a license for importation into India. The government's objective is to establish the presence of "trusted" hardware and systems, thereby diminishing reliance on imports and fostering domestic production of these commodities. Notably, this constraint will not be applicable to travellers carrying the specified devices in their personal baggage.
