Closed CNIL investigation into Google cookies policy compliance with Data Protection Act

On 13 July 2023, the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) closed its investigation into Google's cookie policy compliance with the French Data Protection Act. In particular, the investigation covered "google.fr" and "youtube.com" websites. The CNIL had previously ordered Google to enable users in France to easily refuse cookies on both websites. Google complied with the order by adding an "Only allow essential cookies" button alongside the cookie acceptance button on google.fr and youtube.com. The CNIL deemed this measure to comply with its order. However, this closure does not address the broader analysis of the new cookie consent windows used on the google.fr and youtube.com websites and their compliance with the Data Protection Act.
