Description

Closed consultation on biometrics code of practice

On 27 August 2023, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) closed its consultation on a potential biometrics code of practice. The OPC is contemplating the implementation of a code of practice, which would entail a set of rules and would modify the application of the Information Privacy Principles (IPP) outlined in the Privacy Act concerning the utilisation of technology for analysing biometric information, introducing a standalone framework for biometric information. The OPC is soliciting guidance regarding the scope of the code and its regulations pertaining to transparency, consent, security, accuracy, purpose limitation, retention, data usage, data disclosure, and the rationale behind data collection.
